Grades 1–6 Homeschool Art Curriculum: What’s Inside Each Lesson

1 Video Slideshow

Welcome to Great Artist Program! We start by studying the artist’s life, analyzing what inspired them, and viewing their artwork. “About the Artist” is delivered as a slideshow with voiceover, creating a digestible lesson that introduces students to master artists throughout the centuries.

1 Video

After learning about the artist, we’ll dive into the art students will recreate. In this short video, students will learn what it takes to SEE like an artist. We cover art history, critique, appreciation, and important vocabulary they’ll need to know to see like a master artist.

1 Follow-Along Video

Next up, we’ll start the drawing! This step-by-step video guides students to follow along with Laurie (GAP’s founder) and draw one line, shape, and detail at a time. While drawing, students will learn essential art skills, including techniques, vocabulary, composition, and more, as they recreate their own masterpiece.

1 Follow-Along Video

Once students have drawn their project, it’s time to color it in and add depth. The “Let’s Color” segment introduces students to new art materials and teaches them how to blend colors and add shadows, depth, interest, and various textures. They’ll learn about color theory, value, and working with different materials for every masterpiece. This section allows students to really make the art their own!

1 Downloadable PDF

Before students finish, they’ll use a downloadable PDF to make real-life connections to their art and add finishing touches. In this segment, they’ll learn how to analyze their art and move from novice to creator. The entire lesson, comprising the four video segments and the accompanying PDF, should take approximately one hour to complete for first graders, one and a half hours for second– to third–grade students, and two hours for fourth– to sixth–grade students.
