Explore Students’ Homeschool Art Curriculum: What’s Inside Each Lesson

1 Video Slideshow

Welcome to the Great Artist Program! We begin by exploring the artist’s history, learning about their life, inspirations, and other notable pieces of artwork. The format is a slide show with a voiceover to help your student visualize the artist and put themselves in their shoes.

1 Video

Next, we’ll learn about the art your student will be recreating. In this video, your student will learn to “see like an artist.” Students learn concepts like art appreciation and critique, art history, and art vocabulary.

1 Follow-Along Video

Now it’s time to put creativity into practice! In this instructional, step-by-step guided video, students follow along and draw one line, shape, and detail at a time. We get to recreate the artist’s masterpiece together. Students learn crucial skills, techniques, vocabulary, and composition as they develop confidence in their creative abilities.

1 Follow-Along Video

In this segment, students are introduced to art material techniques. Color your masterpiece with Laurie (GAP’s founder), and learn to blend colors and add shadows, depth, texture, and interest. Students learn about color theory, value, and a variety of materials as they color in their masterpiece. In our “Let’s Color” section, students are invited to add their own flair to their art.

1 Downloadable PDF

We’re almost done! Before students finish, they will review the concepts and skills learned in the lesson using a downloadable PDF. Students are encouraged to analyze their art, add finishing touches, and make it their own. The entire lesson, including the four video segments and the PDF, should take approximately one hour to complete for first graders, one and a half hours for second– to third–grade students, and two hours for fourth– to sixth–grade students.

The Tools Students Need to Get Started
